What is a cookie?
Cookies are small files which are stored on a user's computer or other terminals (smartphone, tablet...). They are designed to hold a modest amount of data specific to a particular client and website, and can be accessed either by the web server or the client terminal. This allows the server to deliver a page tailored to a particular user, or the page itself can contain some script which is aware of the data in the cookie and so is able to carry information from one visit to the website to the next.
What are cookies for?
Each cookie is effectively a small lookup table containing pairs of (key, data) values - for example (firstname, Louis) (lastname, Bilder). Once the cookie has been read by the code on the server or client terminal, the data can be retrieved and used to customise the web page appropriately.
Cookies have different functions. A cookie may allow the person who deposited it to recognize a user, from one visit to another, thanks to a unique identifier. Some cookies may also be used to store the contents of a shopping cart, others to save the language settings of a site, or to perform visit statistics.
For the European Federation of Cybersecurity Experts, cookies are used for the proper functioning of the site and the feeding of statistics of visit.
The configuration of each browser is different, it is described in the help menu of the browser with which the user accesses the Internet, namely:
However, in case of cookie refusal, some parts of the site may be inaccessible.
